Women’s Basketball Takes Season Opener Over Clark

Helena van Ess

Bellevue College women’s basketball claimed victory in their season opener with a 79-76 win over Clark last night at Courter Family Athletic Pavilion. The Bulldogs held off a scoring surge by the Penguins in the second half to hold on down the stretch as Clark put up 51 points on the board after netting only 25 in the first half.

The Bulldogs wasted no time getting things off to a hot start this season by jumping ahead 19-13 after the first quarter, and a 34-25 lead at halftime. Freshman redshirt, Sav Huerta, a transfer from NCAA division II Alaska-Fairbanks, was 4-for-5 including a pair of three pointers to score 10 points in the first quarter.

In the fourth, the Penguins managed to tie the game at 72 with 1:24 remaining but Huerta lit it up from three-point land once again to put the ‘dogs back up 75-72. Sophomore Helena van Ess made both free throws after being fouled with one second remaining to seal the win.

Huerta had 24 points while van Ess had 18. She was 8-for-10 from the free throw line and had three steals. Third year sophomore McKayla Rodriguez pulled down a team-high nine rebounds.

Bellevue is 1-0 and will host Highline next Tuesday November 29 at 6:00 p.m.
