Baseball Inks 12: Introducing The 2023 Recruiting Class

Bellevue College baseball has signed 12 in the 2023 class as announced by co-Head Coaches David Olson and Mark Yoshino. While the staff is still seeking a few more late bloomers or transfers to complete the roster, here is a rundown on their recruits below.

Jackson May
Outfielder
West Valley HS (Yakima)
Summer/Club Team: Yakima Valley Pepsi-Paks

Coach David Olson comments: At Bellevue we have had a good tradition of Pepsi-Pak players throughout the years and Jackson keeps that tradition going.  He is a toolsy player showing some bat speed, arm speed and foot speed in his game.  We are excited to see how he can develop into a complete package on the defensive and offensive end of the game. Jackson is a throwback to the great athletes of yesterday’s era: a true three-sport football-basketball-baseball guy. Another great get out of the traditionally strong summer program run by Mike Archer.

Jayden Holloway
Outfielder
Seattle Prep HS
Summer/Club Team: City Baseball

Coach David Olson comments: Another toolsy outfielder, we are excited to have Jayden on the squad next year.  A top-50 prospect named by Baseball Northwest, he is one of our most athletic big time recruits of this class. As he continues to develop, I think he will be a highly recruitable player out of our program.  He has a good frame at 6’3” to put on a lot of strength and profile as a good defensive outfielder with the ability to showcase pop in his bat and steal some bags.

Brandon McKinley
Infielder
Woodinville HS
Summer/Club Team: FCA

Coach David Olson comments: Brandon is a high school shortstop that profiles in our program and the next level at third base.  His good glove, strong arm and powerful bat are definite plusses at that position.  This is a similar toolset to a Bellevue great Nick Hovland now playing at the University of Washington.  Through continued development, Brandon should be an impact player right away as a true freshman.

Tyson Schertenleib
Middle Infielder / Utility
Brewster HS
Summer/Club Team: Farmers

Coach David Olson comments: Tyson is an athletic player who can play almost any position on the field.  With a good glove and arm strength, Tyson is likely going to find himself in the middle of the infield at Bellevue, but has the ability to play the corner or roam in the outfield.  He also shows a lot of upside with the stick as he has showcased the ability to be a power hitter and drive the ball gap to gap.  As a multi-sport athlete in high school, we are excited to see what the focus on baseball will add to his game.

Erik Petrie
Outfielder
Lincoln HS
Summer/Club Team: Elevate Baseball

Coach David Olson comments: Erik is a true center field type player.  Touting plus speed and good arm strength, he should be a plus defender for the Bulldogs.  We are excited to see how Erik’s game is going to improve.  While already being solid in the outfield, the weight room and consistent work should develop the power tool in his swing.  Erik has a bright future in baseball.

Bryan Sfanos
Left-Handed Pitcher / Outfield
Issaquah HS
Summer/Club Team: Lakeside Recovery Centers

Coach David Olson comments: Bryan is a two-way athlete who shows promise to help both offensively and defensively.  While he projects well as a LHP, Bryan should also add to some production in the Bulldog lineup.  He boasts a smooth swing from the left side with the potential to add some pop as he continues to get stronger.

Coach Mark Yoshino comments: Sfanos is yet another former camper MVP here who we identified in Little League as “a dude”. It was only a matter of time before everyone raved about this guy as he is solid fundamentally and has tremendous poise and maturity which he showed as a young kid.  Comes from a great high school and summer program under Rob Reese. A local guy who just does his thing and gets noticed when you perform and compete. Proof that good coaches find good players, not the other way around.

TJ Armstrong
First Base / Utility
Lincoln HS
Summer/Club Team: City Baseball

Coach David Olson comments: TJ is a first base / utility type player.  His 6’ 6” frame projects at 1B for us at Bellevue, but his athleticism should put him at 2B quite a bit for his high school team.  We are excited to see his development here.  TJ shows to be another middle of the order type bat with gap to gap potential and a chance to be a gold glover at first base.

Luke Sketchley
Left-Handed Pitcher / First Base
Chief Sealth HS
Summer/Club Team: Baden

Coach David Olson comments: Luke has truly emerged in the last few years. His body has developed and is now not only a college prospect, but a two-way one at that. He has power with wood and has the potential to be a head-turner with his RBI production capability.

Coach Mark Yoshino comments: A big strong power-type lefty, his pitching style and stuff are very similar to Sfanos, our other left-handed two-way recruit. Excited to work on some clean up work with him to enhance his movement on the arm side and angle of attack.

Staely Moore
Right Handed Pitcher
Anacortes HS
Summer/Club Team: Nor Cal

Coach Mark Yoshino comments: Staely, along with Terry Hayes Jr. (mentioned below), are probably the two cleanest, most polished arms coming in mechanically. I first heard of Staely two summers ago on Sweets Baseball, and came with highest recommendation on his leadership from his high school coach, Pat Swapp. He throws multiple pitches for strikes, so he’s already got one foot in the door for immediate success next year. As he grows in the next few years he may be one of the most polished arms in the northwest.

Tristan Aasland
Right Handed Pitcher
Mount Si HS
Summer/Club Team: Washington A’s

Coach Mark Yoshino comments: Tristan is a long, lean, pitching coach’s dream come true. He has the arm action, body, and natural look of a pitcher. He’s a fringe DI arm now and in a couple years should be a no-brainer given his qualities coming in. While there are some striking similarities (including his voice) with his dad, who played here in ’96 and was named the MVP pitcher on the team, there are subtle differences as well which makes my enthusiasm to work with Tristan grow even more.

Drew Welk
Right Handed Pitcher
Bellarmine Prep HS
Summer/Club Team: Narrows

Coach Mark Yoshino comments: Drew was our first verbal commit as a junior in high school this past June. Wow, have times changed. I guess it’s only a matter of time before I’m offering middle-schoolers with Mitch Canham, coach at Oregon State. Although early, he was a star at Bellarmine and has gotten so good so fast. He went from being just a name on a list to a guy I had to run out to see as he became one of the most dominant pitchers in the 18U scene last summer. Drew follows the path of Rylen Bayne and Noah Deese, front line pitchers from Narrows, who have come to Bellevue, and believe he will be a big impact guy like the arms he follows.

Terence Hayes, Jr.
Right Handed Pitcher
Liberty HS
Summer/Club Team: Sweets

Coach Mark Yoshino comments: Hayes might not only blossom into a power-five arm, but a possible draft guy as well. He’s the 17th rated top prospect in the state by Baseball Northwest and is still committed to us even though he’s received four-year division I offers. Not only is he super clean mechanically, but he has clear vision of what he wants and is patient with the process. He’s also a pitcher, not a thrower, even though he breaks 90 on the gun. Was so fun watching him in the Pro Scout Game at Baseball Northwest last August. His first bullet was 91 mph but then strikes out the hitter on a fading change. Two Northwest Championship participants who were there as fans watching in front of me comment, “That’s just so unfair” as Hayes embarrassed hitters.  Hayes then drops a 12-6 hammer curve on the first pitch to the next batter for a strike. He hasn’t even arrived yet but has already shown he’s a perfect fit…an absolute dude with feel.
