Whatcom Rallies Over Bellevue Women

Bellevue College women’s basketball tried valiantly to hold onto an eight-point lead after three quarters of play but eventually fell 72-69 to host Whatcom.

Afte three quarters of consistent offense, putting up 20,18, and 20 in the first through third quarters, the ‘dogs went cold, making only three-of-17 in the fourth quarter. Outrebounding the Orcas 16-8 in the quarter, BC had plenty of chances but could not convert as Whatcom rallied late with a little over three minutes to go.

Bellevue went scoreless from the 3:43 mark until :42 left in the game when Sav Huerta finally got one to fall on a breakaway layup following a steal. Whatcom answered with a three-ball and two free throws traded off between Benemi Sanchez and Huerta. Huerta had a chance to tie it up but just missed a three-point attempt with six seconds remaining in the heartbreaking loss.

Third-year soph Bri Byrnes had a stellar night in front of her hometown fans as the Ferndale grad had 17 points and 11 rebounds. Gwen Aasland had 16 points and pulled down 17 rebounds and had five steals.

Bellevue plays next at Everett Saturday January 21 at 2:00 p.m.
