Van Ess Powers Bulldogs Past Olympic

Bellevue College women’s basketball, behind the sharp shooting of Helena Van Ess, came back from a first quarter deficit to overtake visiting Olympic 74-61 at Courter Family Athletic Pavilion.

Down 17-11after one quarter, BC stormed back with a 23-11 second quarter edge and took control the rest of the way. Bellevue shot the lights out, 10-for-15 in the quarter. Van Ess threw in two three-pointers in the third quarter as the ‘dogs stretched the lead all the way up to 20 points with 2:07 remaining in the quarter, 55-35.

The Rangers would make a bit of a run late in the third quarter into the fourth, whittling the lead down to four at 51-55 before Bellevue’s Gwen Aasland answered up with two quick buckets to give Bellevue breathing room for the remainder of the game.

Van Ess had 19 points on six-for-nine shooting while Aasland had 16 points and 12 rebounds. Bri Byrnes had 17 points, six steals, and four assists for the Bulldogs.

Bellevue is 4-3 in North Region play and have a week of until their next action Wed. Jan. 8 at Peninsula at 5 p.m.
