Men’s Basketball Score Big OT Win

Bellevue College men’s basketball broke open a game that was tied at 68 after regulation with a 15-4 run to beat host Skagit Valley 83-72 in overtime.

After leading 42-35 at halftime, the Cardinals held the recently hot-shooting Bulldogs to only 26 second half points as the ‘dogs shot an ice-cold 27% from the field. The momentum swing allowed Skagit Valley to lead by as much as six deep into the game 66-60 before the Bulldogs made a late run to tie the game. A steal and layup by Prophet Johnson cut the lead to 68-66 with 1:37 left which was followed up by two huge free throws by Aydan Janssan with :48 remaining to tie it up. Neither team could get a basket to fall in the closing seconds which led to the overtime scoring spree by the Bulldogs.

Bishop Tosi dominated the overtime scene with nine points and six rebounds. His tip in off an Owen Moriarty shot put Bellevue up 74-70. He then came through with a big three-pointer and two free throws to give Bellevue a commanding 79-72 lead with 1:07 left.

Johnson led Bellevue with 27 points and 10 rebounds while Tosi had 19 points and 12 rebounds. Janssan had 14 points and rebounds as the threesome combined for 70% of the team’s points and rebounds.

The huge road win keeps Bellevue right in the thick of things in the North Region playoff race as they move to a tie with Everett for third place at 7-5 (17-9 overall). They are one game behind second place Edmonds with two games to play. The ‘dogs host Shoreline this Sunday Feb. 26 at 2 p.m.
