Women’s Basketball Notches First Win In Opening Series

Bellevue College women’s basketball lost two games before earning their first win to open up the 2024-25 campaign at the Clackamas Tournament this weekend. Bellevue fell 85-65 to Umpqua on Fri. Nov. 22 before losing to host Clackamas 80-48 on Sat. Nov. 23. In the third game finale on Sun. Nov. 24 BC topped SW Oregon 70-51.

In the Bulldogs’ season opener, the initial jitters were present as Umpqua made 12-of-16 shots with 14 rebounds for 30 points while Bellevue managed just three-for-19 shooting with only four rebounds. Bellevue competed evenly for the remainder of the game but had enough damage done in the opening quarter to give the Riverhawks the win. Incoming fourth-year transfer Devynn Warns, led Bellevue with 21 points and eight steals and eight rebounds, including five on the offensive end. Aysha Peter had 17 points while Ghadir Ramadan had a team high nine rebounds.

In the Clackamas loss, the Bulldogs gave the Cougars too many opportunities courtesy of 10 Clackamas steals. The Cougars outshot BC 40 to 26% and were at the line a whopping 32 times, cashing in on 23 of them to distance themselves in the lopsided victory. The second quarter was the big blow for Bellevue after being outscored 27-10 after a respectable 19-14 first quarter deficit. Warns again led Bellevue with 11 points and seven rebounds; both team highs. Myana Calloway had 11 points as well.

The 0-2 start didn’t deter Bellevue from coming out aggressively on Sunday as Bellevue raced out to a 21-13 lead after the first quarter against SW Oregon. Bellevue played it’s most consistent game of the year and closed out with an 18-10 fourth quarter run to put the game away. The early first quarter momentum was highlighted by a Calloway shot that put BC up 10-2. From there on BC cruised and nearly doubled the score of the Lakers with 5:23 to go in the first half as Peter’s layup gave Bellevue a commanding 30-16 lead.

SW Oregon would manage to get back to within seven at 57-50 in the fourth quarter before a seven point run, including four from Calloway, turned the game into a blowout win for the ‘dogs.

Calloway had 16 points while Warns added 15 followed by Peter with 14 and Lily Auelua with 12 in the balanced scoring attack for Bellevue.

Bellevue’s next action is Fri. Dec. 6 against Green River in the Pirate Classic hosted by Peninsula College in Port Angeles. Tip off is set for 4 p.m.
