Bellevue College men’s basketball suffered two tough blows in a heartbreaking 58-57 loss to host Lower Columbia. After scoring 40 points in the first half the Bulldogs were held to just 17 in the second half as Lower Columbia out-rebounded BC 22-9. The ball control was a flip of the first half in which Bellevue shot 50% and out-rebounded the Red Devils 23-13.
BC’s first tough pill to swallow was surrendering a commanding 40-22 lead in the second half and were up by double digits at 46-36 at the 12:05 mark. Bellevue went scoreless for four minutes as the Red Devils got the game to a respectable margin. The 14-4 run by LC kept going as they would eventually tie the score at 50 with 5:01 remaining.
The final five minutes were neck and neck before Max Mayo clutched up with two free throws with 1:34 remaining to put the ‘dogs up 57-54. A bucket by the Red Devils would bring them to within one as a desperation foul put Bellevue’s Isaiah White at the line. White’s free throw was off the mark and for a brief moment seemed it wouldn’t matter as LC’s Kap Laila missed a chance to win it. Red Devil David Young was there though as time expired for the put back buzzer beater off an offensive rebound.
Mayo led Bellevue with 15 points. Bellevue is now 5-8 and will travel to Highline on Fri. Jan. 3. Tipoff is set for 6 p.m.
