Women’s Basketball Compete at LCC Holiday Classic

Bellevue College women’s basketball returned from the holidays with the three-day LCC Holiday Classic hosted by Lower Columbia College. Bellevue went 2-1 on the weekend and closed with a strong win over Clark College.

On Fri. Dec. 28, Bellevue lost to the host 66-63. Devynn Warns’ 32 points wasn’t enough to catch the Red Devils, as Lower Columbia outscored BC 21-16 in the final quarter to earn the victory.

With Bellevue up 63-59 with a minute remaining, Lower Columbia drained two consecutive three pointers in a span of 30 seconds to take the lead 65-63 and would ultimately hold on in the thrilling comeback win for LC. For Warns, of her 32 points, 16 were from the free throw line as the sophomore transfer put up 40 shots on the night; 21 from the field and 19 from the line as the Red Devils committed 30 fouls in the game. Ghadir Ramadan had 10 rebounds for BC.

On Sun. Dec. 29 Bellevue took on a second West Region opponent in Pierce College. Bellevue lit up the scoreboard for 47 first half points en route to a 78-52 win. After jumping up 20-9 in the first quarter, Myana Calloway was a one woman show in the second quarter, scoring 19 points on seven-for-eight shooting, including five-of-six from long range behind the three point arc. The lopsidedness continued in the third quarter as BC outscored the Raiders 19-10. Calloway ended up with 23 points while Ramadan continued to dominate underneath with 12 rebounds. The ‘dogs were aggressive on the defensive front with 15 steals in the game, led by Warns and Katen Myers who had four each.

Bellevue’s final game of the tourney was on Mon. Dec. 30 vs. Clark. Tied at 26 at halftime, the Bulldogs staged a strong third quarter with 24 points and only three turnovers. As Clark picked it up offensively in the same quarter, BC outdid them with 11-for-14 shooting from the free throw line. Calloway and Sequoia Turner made seven of the 11.

In the fourth quarter, Clark rallied to take a 57-55 lead but Ramadan and Warns answered with quick buckets to diffuse the Penguin lead. The clutch Bulldog offense continued as Aysha Peter nailed a huge three-pointer with 40 seconds remaining to put the ‘dogs up by four at 63-59 to seal the win. Peter led the Bulldogs with 16 points and seven rebounds while Warns was solid all around with 13 points, eight rebounds, six assists, and three steals.

Bellevue moves back to .500 with a 7-7 record with the two wins over the weekend and will have it’s final pre-season tune up this Sat. Jan. 4 at home vs. Pierce at 2 p.m.
