Bellevue College baseball won and lost two games each this weekend in a four game series with Tacoma. On Fri. Feb. 28, Bellevue swept Tacoma by scores of 12-10 and 7-2 before falling 6-1 and 8-2 on Sun. Mar. 2.
In the opener, after spotting Tacoma an early 4-0 lead in the first inning, Bellevue put up eight runs in the third to take the lead and another three in the middle innings to hold onto the win. In the big eight run third, only one run scored via a hit as errors and wild pitches following three singles by Zach Hudson, Jackson Dulay, and Caden Kennelly led off the inning. Hudson, who led off the inning with a hit, came around a second time and got the lone RBI hit, a double to score TJ Armstrong. Colin Fraser threw three and one-third innings for the win in relief while Drew Welk fanned five in earning the save.
In the Friday nightcap, the Bellevue pitchers were sharper after being erratic in game one. Dylan Skolfield, JT Rican, and Jacob Gabler combined for 11 strikeouts and gave up only three hits and one earned run in the game. Again, defensive miscues by Tacoma led to big innings for BC as two hit batters and an error led to Bellevue’s first two runs in the bottom of the first. Elliot Oster had a two-RBI double in the second inning, which proved to be the game winner. BC put up three insurance runs in the eighth on a double by Drew De La Cruz and singled by Bobby Trigg and Kennelly.
On Sunday, there were little highlights for the ‘dogs on both the offensive and defensive front as the bullpen faltered in the middle innings in both games while and starting pitching struggled in game four, for the second time in the four game set. The bats were silent all day Sunday as not one Bulldog generated more than one hit the entire day. Terry Hayes Jr. went four innings in the opener and did not give up an earned run with zero walks.
Bellevue is 5-7 and will play a four game set with Pierce, another West Region annual rival this weekend. Game dates are tentatively set for noon on Sat. Mar. 8 at Bellevue and noon on Sun. Mar. 9 at Fort Steilacoom Park in Lakewood. Dates and times may be revised later this week due to forecasted showers.
