Bellevue College and Everett continued their on-off battle of trading wins and losses as the two top teams in the North Region split a set of four games over the weekend. On Sat. Apr. 26, the Bulldogs and Trojans split a pair of lopsided games, as Everett won the opener 15-5 before Bellevue came back and won 13-1 in the nightcap. The Bulldogs led 4-2 in the opener through five innings, but gave up 14 runs in the next four innings in the blowout loss. Tyson Schertenleib tripled home Jackson May and Braeden Reese which, at the time, seemed to be a sign of a win putting Bellevue up 2-1. Bellevue put up runs in four straight innings from innings four through seven but ran out of steam once Everett put up crooked numbers late in the game. Schertenleib and Noah Fields each had three hits.

In game two, Bellevue put up five runs and knocked Everett starter Blake Sandvik, who entered the game as one of the top arms in the NWAC, out of the game before completing an inning. From there, the ‘dogs plated seven more runs in the third and fourth innings as Terry Hayes Jr. settled in to throw six innings of one run ball with seven strikeouts. After surrendering two singles in the first inning, Hayes allowed only two for the next five innings for the win. Ollie Hogan had two hits and a double to lead Bellevue’s offense.

On Mon. Apr. 28, the Bulldogs traveled to Everett and won the opener 10-5, despite being outhit 14-7. Bellevue jumped up 2-0 in the second inning then tacked on seven more runs in the next three frames to take a commanding 9-0 lead before Everett would slowly rally to make a game of it, plating five runs in the second half of the game. Braeden Reese and Drew De La Cruz both singled in runs to give BC the early lead. Wild pitches, walks, and passed balls led to several of Bellevue’s seven runs in innings four through six for the insurance lead. De La Cruz and TJ Armstrong each had two hits and two runs for the ‘dogs.

In the series finale, Bellevue had the bases loaded three times, including the ninth but fell short 7-5. Three singles, by De La Cruz, Caden Kennelly, and Fields, and two walks led to two runs and the bases loaded for BC, but Everett reliever Nathan Harb struck out the final two batters to end the rally to cap off a thrilling four game set between the two clubs.

Fields was four-for-six while catcher Zack Hudson was three-for-five to lead BC’s offense. Ethan Thomas was stellar in relief with six strikeouts and no walks while giving up only two hits in relief, but the damage was done early as Everett scored six runs in the first three innings to put Bellevue in catch up mode all game.

The Bulldogs now turn the page and look to another impactful weekend on the league playoff race as they battle league-rival at Edmonds this Fri. May 2 at 4 p.m.
