
Bellevue College softball split four home games over the weekend, sweeping Douglas on Fri. May 2 6-3 and 6-1. The ‘dogs lost two on Sat. May 3 to Edmonds, falling 6-3 and 14-4.
In the Friday wins, Bellevue won the opener with runs in the first three innings, up 6-0 after three as Riley Pirkle went the distance in the circle giving up only four hits. After plating single runs in the first and second innings, the big blow came in the third as Bellevue scored four, with Pirkle leading things off with an RBI double to score Brooke Baker. Preslie Jensen hit an inside the park home run for three RBI’s to finish out the inning. Avery Grutz and Maddie Repp each had two hits along with Jensen and Pirkle.
In game two on Friday, Bellevue’s big inning was the fourth, plating five runs in the fourth, breaking a 1-1 tie. Anna Fowler, Baker, and Hallie Sehlin had consecutive RBI hits to deliver the big blows for BC. Baker was stellar in the circle with a complete game effort allowing only four hits and seven strikeouts.
In Saturday’s first game, the Bulldogs fell behind early 5-1 and could not get anything going offensively as BC rallied for two runs in the bottom of the seventh, down 6-1. Sehlin and Pirkle had RBI hits and had two runners on but Edmonds was able to wiggle out of it as Jaclyn Huntzinger lined out to end the game.
In the weekend finale, BC’s pitching ran out of steam as Edmonds scored 13 runs in the first three innings in a lopsided lead Bellevue could not overcome. Fowler had two hits and two stolen bases while Jensen had two hits as well including a double.
The ‘dogs dropped into third place in the North Region at 20-6 (25-11 overall), but have a shot at moving up in the standings with six games remaining this upcoming week. Bellevue travels to Douglas for a make up doubleheader Mon. May 5. First pitch is set for noon.
