Baseball Splits With Edmonds

Bellevue College baseball split a four game set over the weekend to Edmonds, keeping the North Region race as tight as it can be heading into the final weekend of league play.

On Fri. May 2, Edmonds swept a pair from BC by scores of 6-2 and 11-8. In the opener, Bellevue starting pitcher Terry Hayes Jr. was brilliant, striking out a season-high 10 batters through six innings, exiting in a 1-1 tie. However, the bullpen faltered as Edmonds put up five runs in the seventh to take a 6-1 lead which was enough to seal the win, spoiling a strong effort from Hayes, who took over as the NWAC leader in ERA at 0.73. The ‘dogs managed just three hits all game. Noah Fields had one of them, a solo home run in the first to give the Bulldogs an early 1-0 lead.

In game two, walks and errors accounted for eight Edmonds runs in the early innings after Bellevue put up eight themselves. In a high-scoring affair early on, it was 8-8 after just three innings before the pitching settled in on both sides. Edmonds took advantage when Bellevue’s Jacob Gabler ran out of steam in the sixth, walking three and hitting a batter after pitching strong from innings three through five. Fields led the offense once again with three hits and two RBI’s while TJ Armstrong had three hits and three RBI’s.

On Sun. May 4, the ‘dogs got revenge with two wins at home winning 4-2 and 7-5. In the opener, Tristan Aasland threw 70 strikes out of 94 pitches in a masterful effort, going eight and two-thirds innings, one out shy of a complete game. Drew Welk entered and coaxed a fly ball on five pitches to earn the save. Armstrong had two hits while Tyson Schertenleib was two-for-four with two RBI’s. Armstrong’s single in the seventh that drove in Bobby Trigg, who doubled to lead off the inning, proved to be the game winner.

In the series finale, Bellevue’s bats put up runs in the first four consecutive innings to take a comfortable 6-2 lead heading into the middle innings, then tacked on a seventh as Jackson May doubled and later scored on a balk and passed ball. Armstrong homered in the second for BC.

Paired with a loss by first place Everett this weekend, Bellevue remains in the hunt for the league title, one game back in the loss column. Bellevue hosts Skagit Valley this Sat. May 10 at 1p.m. before wrapping up the regular season on Mother’s Day Sun. May 11 in Mount Vernon. Saturday’s games will be followed up with a ceremony for the 21 departing sophomores and Mother’s Day dinner celebration for all BC Baseball families.
