Bellevue College softball, in the middle of an eight game stretch in one week, split a doubleheader at Douglas on Mon. May 5, losing 18-15 before taking the nighcap 9-4. In the high scoring opener, Bellevue jumped out 8-3 but then gave up 15 unanswered runs in inning five and six. Bellevue managed to get two runs across in the top of the seventh but fell short in a game that featured 40 base hits. Bellevue outhit Douglas 21-19. Douglas scored seven runs on only four hits in the fifth as a combinations of hits, walks, errors, and passed balls led to the big innings for Douglas. In the seventh, Avery Grutz and Preslie Jensen scored after a single and error, but could not get a big inning going to match Douglas’ middle innings. Brooke Baker was five-for-five while Riley Pirkle had three hits and four RBI’s.

Game two was a complete contrast offensively as Baker took to the circle and promptly tossed a complete game four-hitter. In the low-scoring affair through five innings, the score was tied 1-1 before Bellevue put up seven runs in the sixth in an inning similar to Douglas’ big inning in game one.

The ‘dogs had seven runs on eight hits as Hallie Sehlin batted around the order and had singles in both of her at bats in the inning. Sehlin, Maddie Repp, Anna Fowler, Ryleigh Wotzka, and Jaclyn Huntzinger all had thw ohits. Repp had three RBI’s.

The split puts Bellevue in a must-sweep scenario tomorrow Wed. May 7 when the Bulldogs travel to Everett for a 4 p.m. first pitch. Bellevue must win both games to tie the Trojans for North Region title hopes.
