Bellevue College women’s basketball took their game on the road post Thanksgiving for the annual Clackamas Holiday Classic, hosted by Clackamas CC in Oregon. Although the Bulldogs went 1-2, the squad pulled off one of their biggest wins in recent years.
Bellevue had a monumental win over Umpqua on Sat. Nov. 29, taking down the Riverhawks 78-67. Coming in as a traditional final four contender and ranked #4 in the NWAC Competitive Athletics Pre-Season Coaches’ Poll, Umpqua could not keep up with Bellevue’s hot shooting, particularly in the decisive third quarter in which the Bulldogs shot a lights out 64% as they poured in 26 points. Although the ‘dogs outscored Umpqua all game leading up to the third, the high scoring quarter took the wind out of the Riverhawks’ sails as their slight 23-17 comeback in the fourth was too little too late. Bellevue established a lead in the first half with consistent free throw shooting, draining 17 of 19 to build a 35-24 lead at intermission.
The ‘dogs had a balanced scoring attack led by Leeschelle Sohappy and Alexis Marcussen with 13 points apiece. Sophomore Katen Myers and Shannel Kovalsky each had 11.
The Bulldogs fell the night prior on Fri. Nov. 28 to host Clackamas 77-63. An early 27-12 first quarter deficit did not help the ‘dogs as they buried themselves early, down 44-22 at halftime. DeAndrea Woods-Singleton led a late fourth quarter charge with seven points to make the score respectable against the undefeated Cougars. Kovalsky led BC with 12 points and pulled down a team-high 10 rebounds.
On Sun. Nov. 30 Bellevue closed out the tourney with a morning game against SW Oregon and lost 67-57. Down 36-23 at halftime, the Bulldogs were in the verge of turning the loss into embarrassment by being outscored 22-8 in the third before turning on the motors in the fourth, outscoring the Lakers 26-9 to bring the score back to a competitive look.
The Bulllogs were cold along all fronts, shooting just 29% from the field and 50% from the line. Going to the long ball was unsuccessful as well as Bellevue cashed in on only four of 29 three-point attempts.
Marcussen led Bellevue with 19 points while Myers was strong underneath with a team high 15 rebounds.
The Bulldogs are 1-4 and will travel to Port Angeles this Fri. Dec. 5 for the Pirate Classic hosted by Peninsula College. The ‘dogs will take on Lower Columbia at 4 p.m.
