Kovalsky Powers Bellevue Women To Win

Bellevue College women’s basketball ran their league record to 2-0 as Shannel Kovalsky led the Bulldogs to an easy 80-53 win over host Everett.

The freshman from Alaska was dominating underneath with second opportunities as she pulled down eight of her game high 12 rebounds on the offensive end and poured in 25 points. Kovalsky was especially hot in the pivotal second quarter as the Bulldogs followed up a tight 19-18 first quarter lead with 25 points in the second. While holding the Trojans to only 12 points in the quarter, Kovalsky was five of seven from the field and had six boards to help BC put up a commanding 44-30 lead heading into halftime.

The Bulldogs blew it open with a 24-11 fourth quarter as the Trojans threw up 17 shots with 13 of them being three point attempts but making just two of them for 15%. Bellevue countered with higher percentage shots as Kovalsky and Aysha Peter combined for five of six shooting to lead the way.

Several Bulldogs had key contributions as Leeschelle Sohappy had 10 points, six rebounds and three steals. Katen Myers had six boards as well while Alexis Marcussen had seven rebounds and a team high five assists. Peter chipped in 10 while D’Ana Esquivel made five of six from the line for 11 points.

Bellevue will host Peninsula in a battle for first place this Wed. Jan. 14 at 7 PM as both teams are currently 2-0 in North Region play.
