In an anticipated close re-match between the top two teams in the North Region, the Bellevue College men’s basketball team easily disposed of host Skagit Valley 82-66 on the Cardinals’ home floor at Duvall Pavilion. The Bulldogs took the initial lead to open the game and never trailed, stretching the lead to 20 points as the Cardinals could get no closer than seven the rest of the way.

Up 14-10, the Bulldogs began to separate early as Darek Usitalo nailed a 15-footer with 11:20 to go in the first half to increase the lead to six. A three pointer by Sawyer Cottrell and another bucket by Usitalo pushed the Bulldog lead to 21-11. Skagit Valley had chances to stay competitive in the first half but squandered away opportunities at the foul line making only nine of 16 shooting only 56%. The low percentage allowed BC to take a 37-29 lead into halftime.

With 13:05 remaining in the second half, the Cards gave it their best shot at closing the gap as Treyshawn Weatherspoon made both ends of his free throw attempts to bring Skagit Valley to within seven at 50-43. But Bellevue’s Josiah Johnson countered with back to back buckets to push the lead back up to near double digits as the ‘dogs never looked back.

Max Mayo led the Bulldogs with 17 points on seven of 11 shooting. Bellevue clinched the North Region title with the win and have a 26 game win streak heading into the final week of league play. They host Whatcom this Wed. Feb. 25 at 5 P.M. as they honor the sophomore members of the team in their final regular season home game.
