Men’s Basketball Wins Final Regular Season Home Game

In another offensive display this season, the Bellevue College men’s basketball team put up 97 points in a 36 point blowout over visiting Whatcom, 97-61. Playing their final regular season home game this year, the Bulldogs were given a tough test briefly for the first ten minutes of the game, clawing back from a small deficit to finally leading for the first time 13-12 with 12:49 to go in the first half. From there on the ‘dogs found their rhythm as an 8-0 run with nine minutes left put BC up 30-19 following a layup by Shawn Etheridge.

In the second half Etheridge helped the Bulldogs push the lead into double digits again with a three pointer at 17:58 to give Bellevue a 46-36 lead. A 7-0 run from that point made it 53-36 as the blowout began.

Darek Usitalo had consecutive buckets to increase the lead to 23 as BC led 65-42 with 13 minutes to go in the game. Max Mayo drained a three pointer with 11:08 remaining to increase the lead to over 30 points as the ‘dogs led 74-42. Mayo was four-for-five from the field including two-for-three from three point range for 11 points in the second half surge. He had 16 on the night while Will Woodward scored 17 with a team high 12 rebounds. Usitalo, playing in his final home game went out with a bang with 14 points and seven rebounds.

Bellevue will begin post season play in the NWAC Sweet Sixteen next Wed. Mar. 4 at 4 P.M. against Yakima Valley, the East Region fourth seed. The tournament will be hosted by Columbia Basin College.
