Bellevue College baseball split four games over the weekend, topping Shoreline in a doubleheader on Sat. Mar. 28 by scores of 4-2 and 8-2 before dropping a pair at home against Everett 4-0 and 12-1.

In Saturday’s wins, Thomas Wood and Mason Smithwick combined for 11 strikeouts as Wood tossed a shutout through four and Smithwick went five innings in long relief for the save. The ‘dogs scored the game winner in the fifth as Ethan Sugimoto stole both second and third before a Thoma Holden sac fly drove him in. The Bulldogs took advantage of an error, hit batter and two walks in rough inning for Shoreline’s pitchers in a 4-run seventh to take the decisive lead.

In Sunday’s tough opening loss, the ‘dogs could muster only four hits as catcher Braeden Reese had two of them. Cooper Richter matched Everett ace Sawyer Wickstrom through the first five innings in a pitchers’ duel as Richter ended up the hard luck loser with 9 strikeouts while walking none in a stellar effort. In the finale, Bellevue jumped ahead 1-0 and showed game control while starting pitcher Will Woodward dominated Everett hitters with another shutout performance striking out four of the six batters faced. Woodward exited after reaching a pitch count limit in his late return to the baseball team after finishing off an MVP season on the hardwood for Bellevue’s basketball team. Unfortunately, all momentum that Woodward established for Bellevue was lost once he exited in the 12-1 drubbing.

Bellevue is 5-3 in league and finishes up the first round of league play this Fri. Apr. 3 with a 4 P.M. doubleheader at Edmonds.
