Bellevue College women’s soccer lost in gut-wrenching fashion against host Whatcom, giving up three late goals in a 3-1 loss in Bellingham. The Bulldogs maintained a 1-0 lead through much of the game before the Orcas found every way possible to find the back of the net, flipping the momentum midway through the second half.
Ariana Heim got the ‘dogs on the board first at 30:17 off a feed from Brynne Cope. Bellevue nearly made it 2-0 as an attempt by Valeria Mora was saved by Whatcom goalkeeper Mia Kennedy. The Bulldogs went into halftime in control, firing off six shots before intermission.
In the second half the Orcas tied it up then immediately gained all the momentum with a penalty kick following a yellow card issuance. Whatcom’s Ella Hansen put the Orcas up 2-1 with 25 minutes remaining in the game. Bellevue’s Anna Sandnes nearly tied it up but Whatcom’s Kennedy came up big again in the box with a save. Whatcom added an insurance goal at 78:08.
Cope hammered Whatcom’s defense all game with four shots before Whatcom’s defense clamped down in the second half. Bellevue is 2-2 in region play and 2-4 overall. The Bulldogs travel to Everett this Sat. Sept. 26 for a noon start.
