The match of the year lived up to it’s hype as two of the top three teams in the NWAC Coaches’ Poll duked it out at Courter Family Athletic Pavilion with visiting Edmonds prevailing 3-2 in a five-set thriller. The Tritons (5-1, 22-3), are ranked third in the latest poll while Bellevue is second.
Edmonds took set one 25-17 behind red-hot hitting as the Tritons committed only two errors hitting .344. The difference came midway through the set as Edmonds used two aces and two unforced Bellevue errors to extend a 10-8 lead to 15-8. Bellevue had a key five point run themselves in set two as two Edmonds errors and two kills by Ja’elle Jenkins stretched a BC lead from 17-16 to 22-16. Edmonds would work their way back to take a 25-24 lead but Bellevue battled from set point with two kills by Ava Nowak to close out the win in set two.
Bellevue had five kills from Jenkins in set three and were in the hunt late, down just 22-20 but Edmonds sophomore Haley Yost, a key returner from last year’s Edmonds team, put down to kills to win set three 25-20 for the Tritons. In set four, BC held a 24-20 lead and managed to hold set point despite late errors allowing Edmonds to creep back to 24-23 before Nowak delivered the set winner to force a deciding fifth set.
Bellevue maintained control for most of set five to 11-10 before two key kills by Edmonds’ Jasmyne Washington and an error moved the needle towards the Tritons, giving them a 13-11 lead. Jenkins gave BC hope with a kill to make it 13-12 before the Tritons’ offense connected on the next two plays to seal the intense rivarly win.
The Tritons had seven aces at the serve line while the ‘dogs managed only two and also had an edge up front with a 12-2 advantage in block assists. Bellevue relied heavily on their outsides as Jenkins and Nowak accounted for 111 of the team’s 139 swings. Nowak and Jenkins had 22 and 21 kills respectively while sophomore libero Tessa Mossburg had 25 digs. Setter Maile Kuamo’o had 30 assists and 11 digs.
Bellevue travels to Skagit Valley this Fri. Oct. 16 for a 7 p.m. match.
