Volleyball Opens Season 4-0

Bellevue College volleyball opened up the 2025 season with an easy undefeated run, going 4-0 in the North Region Invite, hosted collectively by Bellevue, Edmonds, Whatcom, and Skagit Valley College. The opening season kickoff tourney brought several NWAC teams from outside regions to the four North schools.

On Fri. Aug. 22, Bellevue opened up with an easy 3-0 win over Spokane, winning 25-12, 25-7, 25-12. Although the Sasquatch started off hot with 13 kills and one error, the dogs’ front row clamped down forcing Spokane to hit at a .054 clip by set three. Mya Hejl had five block assists while sophomore Olivia Chilton, coming off a limited freshman campaign due to a lingering ankle injury, had four block assists and two solo blocks. Karisa Martin was the go-to player on right side with 11 kills hitting at a .500 clip.

In match two, BC took down Wenatchee Valley, 25-21, 25-11, 25-11. Martin had seven kills along with Hejl and sophomore transfer Kiana Cueto. Freshman Ava Nowak made an immediate impact from the serve line with six aces and led the ‘dogs defensive efforts with 17 digs.

On Sat. Aug. 23, the Bulldogs had to work harder than on day one, winning 25-18, 27-25, 25-21 over Treasure Valley. Gillian Merhoff led BC with nine kills and five block assists. Bellevue’s back row was on fire with 65 digs.

In the finale, BC took down a competitive Rogue team, 25-20, 25-22, 23-25, 25-19. Although the Bulldogs had 21 hitting errors, the squad found a way with the defense again with 71 digs. Nowak had 22 of them to cap off a stellar weekend. Lina Burke had 13 digs and had three aces from the serve line for the ‘dogs.

Bellevue has their first road trip of the year this Tue. Aug. 26 as they travel to Mt. Hood for a 4 p.m. first serve. The ‘dogs will they travel the next day to Albany to take on perennial power Linn-Benton before trekking up I-5 to close out the trip at Clackamas.
