
After steam-rolling through straight sets all of last weekend at the Blazer-Clipper Classic, Bellevue College volleyball had to rebound after losing the first set last night but came away with a 3-1 (27-29, 25-23, 25-18, 25-15) win over visiting Lower Columbia.
The Bulldogs were rusty with their offensive attack, with a season-high 27 errors, but managed due to Lower Columbia swinging at an even lower percentage for the night. In set one the ‘dogs had a comfortable lead at 19-14 but three hitting errors let the Red Devils back in it. Lower Columbia capitalized and made a run with three straight service aces by Lillian Halberg to take the lead at 23- 22. BC stayed alive on three straight set points with kills by Gillian Merhoff, Lucci Unga, and Kiana Cueto, but the serve receive woes got to the ‘dogs once again as Lower Columbia wrapped up set one with an ace by Kamryn Sande.
Bellevue had to work for set two as well, with the score tied at 23. An ace by sophomore Mya Hejl gave BC the lead before two errors by Lower Columbia gave Bellevue the set.
The ‘dogs were down 11-6 in set three before flipping the momentum going on a 19-7 run to close out set three. With the offense finally clicking Bellevue went up 13-3 in set four to cruise to victory.
Karisa Martin had 13 kills and hit .455 to lead the Bulldogs while Merhoff had 11 kills, three aces, and 16 digs.
Bellevue will travel to the East Region Crossover Tourney in Pasco this Fri. Sept. 12 and will open up play with an 11 a.m. match vs. Clackamas.
