Bellevue College men’s basketball won 80-70 over host Whatcom in North Region play. The Bulldogs used a contrast of offensive weapons, relying on perimeter shooting in the first half before going down under for points in the paint in the second.

The Bulldogs got over half of their 36 first half points from their guards as Sawyer Cottrell, Caden Culver, and Shawn Etheridge combined for 19 points and four three pointers to give BC a 36-29 lead. The Orcas stayed with Bellevue not only on the scoreboard but in the rebounding category as well. Dominating underneath all season long, the ‘dogs were actually outrebounded 19-14 in the half, keeping Whatcom in the game heading into the second half.

But the Bulldogs went to their consistent weapon, Will Woodward who stepped it up a notch in the second half, pouring in 19 points on seven for nine shooting and was five of eight from the free throw line.

Whatcom briefly had the lead early on in the second half following a pair of Elijah Andrews free throws, putting the Orcas up 41-40. But Woodward ended the threat with two consecutive buckets to give back the lead to BC which was never relinquished again for the remainder of the game.

Woodward had 28 points on the night while Cottrell added 13.

Bellevue now rides a 20 game win streak and are 7-0 in league play. The ‘dogs have the weekend off before traveling to Edmonds next Wed. Feb. 4 for a 5 PM tipoff.
