
Bellevue College baseball split a four-game series with Skagit Valley over the weekend, keeping the ‘dogs in third place with a narrow one game margin over the Cardinals. On Fri. Apr. 10 Bellevue fell 5-2 before taking the nightcap 9-6. Taking a day off on Saturday, the Bulldogs blanked Skagit Valley 2-0 in the Sunday opener before falling 6-4 in the series finale.
In the Friday opener, Colin Fraser made his starting debut on the mound after nursing a pre-season shoulder injury and was sharp through four innings, allowing no earned runs. After being removed in the fifth due to pitch count, the Cardinals’ Gavin Poffenroth delivered the big hit with a 2-RBI double off reliever Michael Komola. Although the Bulldogs outhit Skagit Valley 9-8, BC could only muster up 2 runs in the game. In game two, Thoma Holden delivered a grand slam home run in the sixth before Braeden Reese doubled and was assisted by two Skagit Valley errors to tack on two insurance runs as Cooper Richter struck out 8 and walked only one going six innings for the win.
On Sunday, Tyler Maurer tossed six shutout innings for the win in the opener. Ethan Sugimoto delivered twice, with RBI’s in the fourth and sixth for the win. In the finale, down 6-2 in the bottom of the ninth, the Bulldogs loaded the bases, scored two on a two-out single by Jaxon Fitzgerald and had runners on base before Skagit Valley’s Beau Benjamin made a leaping grab, robbing Holden of a base hit in the ninth. Reese and Sugimoto each had 2 hits.
Bellevue is now 14-18 on the year and will travel to Douglas this Sat. Apr. 18 for a 1 P.M. doubleheader.
