After sweeping them at home a week ago in two close games, the Bellevue College bulldog softball team could not take a third straight win over Everett, losing 11-3 to their North Region rivals in the opening round of the NWAC Championships. The 12-team tourney held at Portland’s Delta Park featured the Bulldogs, seeded ninth against the eighth seeded Trojans in a single elimination game.
After two scoreless innings, Everett got on the board first with two runs of Bellevue’s Ava Jeretzky, who earlier won Pitcher of the Year honors for the North Region. However, Jeretzky fatigued, surrendering nine runs in the fifth and sixth innings combined before the game was called due to the run limit rule.
The Bulldogs managed to stay in the game with three runs in the top of the sixth, highlighted by a home run by Abby Watkins. With two outs, Bellevue managed to manufacture two more runs on singles by Avery Grutz, Maddie Zimprich, and Shannon Tierney, putting the score at 6-3. With the Trojans responding with five runs in the bottom half of the inning, the ‘dogs season came to an unfortunate earlier ending than expected.
Bellevue finishes with a 30-win season at 30-17. The Bulldogs also took home several honors. Besides Jeretzky winning Pitcher of the Year, Abby Watkins (infield), Shannon Tierney (outfield), Allie Barashkoff (utility) and Maddie Repp (catcher) all earned first team All-North Region honors. Avery Grutz was named to the second team infield.
