Bellevue College volleyball came back from a close opening set loss to defeat host Lower Columbia 3-1 by scores of 23-25, 25-20, 25-22, 25-21. The ‘dogs hit .250 on the night and oddly lost the opening set in which they were cleanest offensively with only three errors, hitting .278. Up 21-20, the Red Devils offense came through with four kills against Bellevue’s front row to take a 24-23 lead which they held for the first set.
The Bulldogs took time to get re-settled, falling down as deep as 15-10 in set two on four straight kills by Lower Columbia’s offense. Two swing errors by the Red Devils brought BC back into it before consecutive kills by Ja’elle Jenkins and Megan Hale gave Bellevue a 22-19 lead; good enough for winning set two. Set three went down to the wire as Maya Velasquez delivered with a point to make it 23-23. Bellevue’s defense then came up big with a block from Cadence Lyon and Hale to seal the win.
Set four was the lone set in which the ‘dogs did not have to battle back from a deficit, building a comfortable 17-12 lead en route to the match ending set. Jenkins led the way for Bellevue with 16 kills while setter Lucci Unga had 18 assists and three aces at the serve line. Jenkins was also clutch in back row with a team high 22 digs.
The Bulldogs are now 9-4 and will host the NWAC Crossover Tourney this Fri. Sept. 11. Bellevue opens up play against Yakima Valley at 9 a.m.
