The Bellevue College Bulldogs women’s basketball team notched another critical North Division win against the Olympic Rangers on Saturday, Feb. 12, to stay close on the tails of the Skagit Valley Cardinals for the top spot in the division. The Bulldogs started strong, but the Rangers provided a tough test throughout the contest. At half time the Bulldogs entered the locker room with a modest 42-31 lead.
In the second half the teams traded baskets, and it was competitive to the very end. The Bulldogs eventually came out on top 81-73. “It wasn’t our best effort of the year, but we came out of it with the win and that’s what matters,” said head coach Brent Hermanson. The Bulldogs were again led by balanced scoring with five players in double figures: Kelsey Sparks led with 17 points and six steals; Sanda Milovic was good for 16 points and pulled down seven rebounds; A.C. DenHartog added 14 and seven rebounds; speedy 5-4 freshman Briana Shannon hit 12 on the glass; and sophomore Phyllea Francis contributed 10 points with six rebounds. This win puts the Bulldogs at 10-1 for league play, 17-4 on the season.
Next up are two road trip games for the Bulldogs. First, the team travels to Mount Vernon for an important match-up against North Division leader Skagit Valley (11-1, 18-4) on Wednesday, Feb. 16 at 5 p.m. Then, on Saturday, Feb. 19, Bellevue is off to take on North Seattle (4-8, 5-15) at 4 p.m. “We’re entering the toughest part of the schedule and will need to be at our best over the next two weeks to keep the top spot in the division,” said coach Hermanson, as the Bellevue women will play four of the top five teams in the North Division over that period.
