Who Is the Biomedical Research Certificate Designed For?
This one-year, 16-credit research certificate is designed for students who would like to gain valuable hands-on research experience in the laboratory.
- It may be a perfect fit for students who are completing prerequisites for professional schools (medical, dental, or pharmacy) and would like to develop lab skills.
- Students who already have a bachelor’s degree but are interested in moving into a lab-based position may also find this certificate useful.
What Will You Learn?
This certificate requires completion of an Advanced Methods in Molecular Biology course (MBS 455) and the three-quarter Capstone course series (MBS 480, MBS 481, and MBS 482). The course load requires two courses in the Fall Quarter (7 credits), one course in Winter Quarter (4 credits), and one course in Spring Quarter (5 credits).
Students will learn basic molecular biology lab techniques in the Advanced Methods course (MBS 455) and then will complete an independent research project applying many of these techniques during the three-quarter Capstone courses. Students also gain valuable skills in written and oral communication of scientific research, as they will maintain a lab notebook, present their results biweekly in lab meetings, and will prepare a research poster, and final research seminar presentation.
