Bellevue College baseball won one of four this weekend at Lower Columbia, falling 7-3 and 5-4 on Friday before winning 7-0 then losing again 5-4 on Saturday. Although the Bulldogs came home with three losses, the squad could have easily have come home with three wins.
Abe Affholter’s towering home run was the lone bright spot in the opener as Lower Columbia’s offense found every hole in the four-run first inning that BC could never recover from. In game two, Bellevue surrendered a comfortable lead due to six errors in the game, including three in a pivotal sixth inning for Lower Columbia as the Red Devils plated four runs, with only one earned. Chase Archibald was the tough luck pitcher, giving up only one earned run in the unfortunate inning.
On Saturday, Bellevue jumped out 4-0 in the first and rode the bats of Affholter and Cam Hoiland who each had two hits to cruise to an easy win. Bellevue used three arms who all dominated in the two-hit shutout as Jake Kaepernick, Luke Vrable, and Rylen Bayne combined for 10 strikeouts. In game two, Bellevue held a 4-3 lead in the seventh inning but then were victimized by an unfortunate situation as reliever Kole Bennett sprained his ankle by getting his cleat caught in the fibers of the artificial turf and had to exit the game. Nate Rasmussen, who was battling severe illness coming into the weekend, was summoned to come in cold due to Bennett’s sudden injury and was the final Bellevue pitcher available. The Red Devils took advantage and scratched across two runs late in the game for the come from behind win; the second time by the identical score in two days.
The Bulldogs, now 4-4, will host Tacoma this Saturday March 4 at 1pm. Any changes or alterations due to weather will be adjusted on the website schedule.
