If you have approved Curricular Practical Training (CPT), Optional Practical Training (OPT), On-Campus Employment or an Employment Authorization Document from USCIS, you will also need to have a social security number.
The Social Security Administration will not issue a number for any other purposes.
Employers will require a social security number to complete the hiring process and be paid.

If You Already Have a Social Security Number
- If you have been issued a social security number in the U.S. in the past, you do not need to apply for a new social security card.
- If your social security number is not valid for employment, you do need to follow the guidelines to apply for a new card that will be valid for employment.
- Possession of a Social Security Number in itself does not make you eligible for employment while on an F-1 visa.
