Reduced Course Loads (Less than Full-Time)

Academic Difficulty

An F-1 visa student who is having initial difficulty with the English language or reading requirements, unfamiliar with U.S. teaching methods or improper course level placement should meet with their International Advisor to discuss permission to drop below 12 credits.

  • This is for the initial academic quarter only, a student must enroll in a minimum of 6 credits.

Medical Reduced Course Load

An F-1 visa student with a temporary illness or other medical condition that interrupts a full course of study should connect with their International Advisor to discuss the requirements and limitations. An International Student Advisor must review the letter from your licensed medical doctor, doctor of osteopathy, psychologist, or clinical psychologist first.

  • Do not drop your classes until your International Student Advisor approves your request. Medical RCL is approved on a quarterly basis and may be allowed for a period not to exceed an aggregate of 12 months (or four quarters) per an education level.

Graduation Reduced Course Load

An F-1 status student who needs fewer than 12 credits to complete their program of study is considered to be pursuing a full course of study if the student enrolls in the number of credit hours required to complete the program in the final term.

  • A student must seek permission BEFORE from an International Advisor to take less than 12 credits based in the last quarter.
