The BC Radiation Therapy Program employs a selective admissions process.
Admission into the program is based upon five areas:
- prerequisite grades,
- a formal interview,
- an assessment test in math and reading, and an
- observation in a radiation oncology department (See Application Checklist).
- The number of affiliated clinics willing to take a student.
Specific prerequisite course requirements are listed under “Prerequisites”. Individual interviews are conducted once a year during the spring quarter by the radiation therapy program interview committee.
All candidates meeting the application and prerequisite criteria outlined under Eligibility Requirements will receive an interview invitation, so long as those courses are completed by the end of Winter quarter. For example, if you are applying for the class that would start fall 2025, you need to complete the prerequisites by the end of winter 2025.
The purpose of the interview is to determine the applicant’s general understanding of the profession, their interpersonal and critical thinking skills.
Clinical Placement Procedure
Student acceptance and clinical placement are contingent upon JRCERT clinical site approval, completion of program prerequisites, transfer credits, background check, immunization status and any other clinical onboarding documentation. All clinical placements are assigned by the program Clinical Coordinator.
Clinical Affiliation contract terms are written to provide assurance the clinic will remain available to the student for the duration of the program. Once a student is selected and placed, the program makes every effort to maintain clinical affiliation. If a clinic disaffiliates before a student begins or during their clinical rotation, the program will make every effort to reassign a clinical placement. Due to limited availability, the program cannot guarantee a replacement clinic. Additionally, any clinical site reserves the right to exclude a student from its premises. If a student is asked to leave their clinical site due to their behavior, conduct or lack of competency progress, the program cannot guarantee that another clinical site will be available. If a student is asked to leave disciplinary action will follow, and the student may be dismissed from the program. Expulsion from one’s clinical site can result in dismissal from the program.
Selective admissions and clinical placement procedure
An applicant is eligible to interview once they meet the prerequisite and application criteria. Selections are made by a committee formed by volunteer faculty and clinical preceptors affiliated with the program.
Factors involved in student selection:
Local:
- Number of clinics willing to take a student.
- Applicants interview score. The score is calculated using a preapproved rubric for 6-8 questions. All applicants are asked the same set of questions.
- Applicants rank their preference of clinics for placement. I.e., List the top 3 choices.
- Recommendations from clinic management and/or staff.
Out of state (non-local):
- Applicants interview score. The score is calculated using a preapproved rubric for 6-8 questions. All applicants are asked the same set of questions.
- Recommendations from clinic management and/or staff.
Acceptance is contingent upon clinical site approval from JRCERT, completion of program prerequisites, transfer credits, background check and immunization status.
