Saturday, November 8, 10AM – 1PM, City of Edmonds Fishing Pier
Preparatory meeting for participants with no fishing experience: Friday, November 7, 2:30 – 4 PM, Room G-114. At this meeting we will go over some fishing basics such as rules and safety, expectations of crabbing and fishing on a pier, and learn how to tie a couple common fishing knots. Afterwards we will go outside and practice using a fishing rod: learn how to set it up, attach a lure, and casting.
Please note: This special event was made possible by a grant from the Bellevue College Foundation.

If you’ve ever wanted to learn how to catch crab or fish for salmon, then this is the event for you! Join BC Math Faculty Ricardo Chavez and Tim Trammel, and BC English Faculty Fernando Pérez for a late morning/early afternoon introductory experience in catching crab and casting for salmon off a fishing pier. No experience or gear required! Fishing license is being provided free of charge by the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife (WDFW) under a group permit with the Wellness Center. If you catch any crab and/or fish, you’ll learn how to clean and prepare it for cooking and eating; a crab boil session will take place at the end of the event nearby the pier.
In the preparatory meeting:
- you’ll receive a pamphlet from the WDFW containing important information regarding the rules and regulations for fishing in the state of Washington. Ricardo will go over some of these regulations with you and it is encouraged that you read certain parts of the pamphlet on your own time to familiarize yourself with this important information. Failure to follow rules and regulations during our event can result in legal consequences — including being cited and/or fined by the WDFW game warden.
- in the classroom, you’ll learn some important skills to help you fish, such as:
- review expectations for fishing event
- learn how to tie a knot to a fishing hook
- review general safety
- once outside, you’ll practice the real thing!
- Set up a fishing rod
- Tie a lure to the fishing rod
- Learn how to operate a spinning reel fishing rod
- Practice casting a lure and reeling it back
Note: this event will take place rain or shine!
