What is XR?

XR (extended reality) typically refers to augmented reality, virtual reality, and mixed reality. The Bellevue College XR Lab works with all three of these technologies, and currently focuses primarily on using virtual reality. Additionally the XR Lab includes many immersive interactive flat screen experiences, selected AI tools, and gamification under the XR umbrella.

Augmented reality (AR) is an immersive experience that combines the real world and computer-generated content. It is especially useful for healthcare education, and AR can be viewed within headsets or by using other technologies such as mobile devices.

Virtual reality (VR) typically utilizes a headset to provide an immersive virtual experience. VR headsets are increasingly used for all fields of education and training.

Mixed reality (mx) often provides a more immersive experience than just VR by involving haptics (simulations of touch and other motions).

Immersive interactive experiences can include a number of technologies such as 360 video, gamification tools, and interactive branching scenarios.
