Student Stories: Where I Am From Poems

Our third and fourth year students composed “Where I Am From” poems as part of their Cultural Awareness course to investigate their own identity and culture before digging into how to be sensitive to others from different cultures in both the workplace and in the community. One of the poems, written by Matthew Rawlings, is below. More poems will be on display at our Share Night.

I am from an island in an inland sea,
I am from Video Games, Lincoln Logs, and Legos spread across the floor.
I am from Forests of alder, maple, and pine next to a sea of saltwater and brine
I am from Plumb Pudding at Christmas and making Potato Soup with Grandma
I am from the families of Rawlings and Gray,
I am from summer trips across the cascades with friends as close as family
I am from the love of family and friends
I am Matthews Rawlings and I came from far more, but for now, these should do

Cultural Awareness is one of the many courses OLS Students take to obtain their associates degree from OLS. More information about our curriculum is available on our website. To learn more about our program register for an upcoming Information Session.
