January 17 was the annual MLK Service Project for OLS Students, faculty, and staff who gathered at the Bellevue College Main Campus to create blankets and inspirational cards for Seattle Children’s Hospital. This annual project is a favorite activity for our students, and many in attendance this year were there for the 3rd or 4th consecutive year.

OLS Student Council and Student Mentors worked hard organizing the event, and students Garrett and Nathan lead a short presentation sharing how the blankets and cards make a big impact for patients at Seattle Children’s Hospital and how this project embodies the spirit of Martin Luther King’s mission. “Martin Luther King was a huge influence on the population and helping his community. We are helping give back to the community with this project. We should all feel lucky we are able to take time to do something that means so much to these individuals,” said Garrett when he shared his thoughts on the project.

A handful of students shared their personal experiences spending time in a hospital as a child, what gifts like these blankets and cards meant to them, and how it helped them during that time. For other students the project provided them an opportunity to give back to their community in a meaningful way. For Mallorie, “…it’s always in my heart to give back, and these blankets and cards give the kids a sense of light in their hospital stays. The smallest things can light up their day, whether from family or a stranger.”

In total the students created 12 blankets and an abundance of creative, inspirational cards.
