Why People Do Service Projects

As part of the Fall Quarter News & Daily Living course, students are assigned to write a news article on a topic of their choice that has to do with the OLS program. We will be sharing their articles on our news page as OLS Student Reporters stories.

Samantha said “People at the OLS program gain experience and are giving back to the community.” By helping people in need, the OLS program every year does two service projects. The students do one in January on MLK day where all the students in the OLS program go to main campus. They make blankets for the Seattle Children’s Hospital because the kids look forward to getting blankets. The kids will feel more at home while in the hospital.

Another service project the students do is the OLS program goes to the Tavon Center in the spring and helps the people that work at the Tavon Center to clean it and plant plants and take the weeds out. What the Tavon Center does it allows people with disabilities work at the Tavon Center that have intellectual and developmental disabilities.

Why I think service projects are important because you gain new experiences and skills by giving back to the community. Why we do the service project at the Seattle Children’s Hospital is the kids that are sick get blankets from OLS every year. The students with staff members at OLS go to the hospital and give the blankets to the people that work there. Students go through the OLS program will have classes that do different community service projects as part of the class.
