Intro to Computers Community Day

OLS students taking Introduction to Computers this quarter celebrated OLS Community Day with Raymona Baldwin of the Disability Resource Center. Raymona shared an informative presentation introducing students to the DRC, what it was for, and how it could serve them as Bellevue College students. Some of the many useful topics highlighted included:

  • Universal Design
  • General Accessibility Tips
  • DRC Remote Accommodations
  • Remote Testing
  • Stress and Mental Health
  • Devices
  • Notetaking

Students were encouraged to asked questions such as, “How can we have help with virtual learning if needed,” and “What made you choose The Disability Resource Center?” Students especially enjoyed asking questions and learning more about assistive technology available to them.

In addition, Raymona taught the students how to use an Initial Access Form to request and schedule an Initial Access Meeting with the DRC. These student meetings serve as a one-hour discussion with Raymona and an Access Specialist regarding their disability, barriers they encounter in an academic setting, and help determining their accommodations.

Beyond learning about some valuable resources, students certainly were able to connect as a community. The students felt especially supported by the DRC and Raymona and enjoyed learning about all of the possibilities for support throughout their academic careers and beyond. Students hope to be able to visit the DRC’s physical location in the future but are so thankful to have online services ready and willing to offer support to ensure student success.

Intro to Computers is one of the many courses OLS Bellevue College students take to obtain their associate degree from OLS. More information about our curriculum is available on our website. To learn more about our program register for an upcoming Information Session.
