Peer Educators
Carmen Pintilie (she/her)
Student Success & Retention Lead Peer Educator
Hi! My name is Carmen. I am enrolled in Business Technology courses, to learn and leverage new tech. Compassionate, do-er and outdoorsy are three words that describe me best. I previously enjoyed being a teacher for over 11 years and, also, being an enthusiastic business professional!
I received my MBA with Honors from City University of Seattle in 2017, with a double specialization in Change Leadership and Human Resources Management. I also hold a BA in English and History of Religions, and a BS in Mechanical Engineering from University of Pitesti, Romania.
My career at BC started as a tutor in 2021, and, for the past two years, I became a peer educator, since I’m passionate about helping our students succeed academically. In my role as a student success coach, I am keen to serve as compassionate guide and kind support for students in academic distress, provide them with holistic information and genuine encouragement, and work with our students in one-on-one virtual appointments, fostering student personal growth and skill development in areas such as time management, motivation/goal setting, study strategies, wellness/managing being overwhelmed, as well as navigating Bellevue College.
A couple of tips I have for students: manage your time with intention, learn how to manage, tolerate, and reduce stressors, know your goals and values, seek out and use campus resources to support your success, and, most importantly, remember to reward yourself! You’ve got this!

Daniel Shako (he/him)
Student Success & Retention Peer Educator
Hello, everyone! I’m Daniel Shako, an international student from Congo currently pursuing an Associate Degree in Electrical Engineering and Computer Science at Bellevue College. My journey from Congo to college has been filled with challenges, including overcoming language barriers and cultural differences. Inspired by the resilience of NFL superstar Pat Mahomes and the heroic tale of “Man of Steel,” I’ve found my passion for helping others.
I have been a peer educator over the past year. My mission is to support my fellow students, sharing my own experiences, and offering a helping hand to foster a sense of community. I believe in the power of empathy and kindness, and I’m here to make a difference in the lives of those around me.
Stress is going to be a part of the academic journey, and everyone is going to have it at some point, but for succeeding, you will have to be able to work under pressure or use techniques to help release stress. Eat and sleep well, be consistent with your work schedule, take advantage of Bellevue College’s mentoring and tutoring services, and, ultimately, have clear academic goals that you will break into weekly goals, which are going to be broken into daily goals!
A couple of tips I have for students: if you have a great mental and physical health, you have clear goals, you manage your time well, and you are disciplined and consistent with your work ethic, you will ultimately get what you want at the end of the day.

Billy Van (he/him)
Student Success & Retention Peer Educator
Hello! I am Billy. I am a student here at BC currently pursuing a Bachelor’s in CS, but it has not always been that way. Before, I had been pursuing a career in Pharmacy for close to 10 years. Close to the end with graduation in sight from the UW School of Pharmacy, I flunked out.
The sacrifices I had made, the efforts that I had put in towards this goal, and the grief I had endured when I realized that this pathway was not for me was a hard pill to swallow. It was several years ago that I started this dream of mine as a student here at Bellevue College, back around 2013.
It was all not for naught, although. Even though I was not able to obtain the Doctorate degree, I have learned much more about myself than I expected. Today as a Peer Educator, I want to help students recognize that what they learn in college is not only in the classroom. I vouch for students to take as much time as you would in Academia to also learn about yourself and your time-management skills, discipline management, and maintaining a healthy lifestyle while attacking your goals.
And ironically, I return to Bellevue College to begin anew back on square one, pursuing a different field. And now, equipped with wisdom I wish I had back when I started in those first steps I took, I would like to introduce myself as one who would like to help guide others with my anecdotes and personal experiences in hopes that others, may benefit from my mistakes.
Now that I am very much more mindful of the steps I take in my chosen pathway, please let me know what questions you have if you ever feel stuck, lost, or are struggling. Because, trust me, I have been there!
