Academic Progress & Impact on F-1 Status

Bellevue College’s Academic Standing policy applies to you, your F-1 status may be terminated if you are dismissed from Bellevue College.

It is important to understand your transcript, course repetition, and making academic progress.

There are three types of GPA (Grade Point Average) listed on your transcript:

  • QTRYL – Quarterly GPA: The average of all course grades for one specific quarter.
  • CUM – Cumulative GPA: The average of all courses on your transcript, including ELIUP courses.
  • CLVL – College-Level GPA: The average of all courses numbered 100 or higher. For example, ENGL 101 is a college-level course. ENGL 93 is not, because its number is below 100.

If you repeat a class, you must complete a Course Repeat Indicator Request. This can be submitted through the Repeated Coursework Request form.

When you repeat a course, your GPA will be recalculated using the new grade. However, the original grade will still appear on your transcript with an “R” (for Repeated) next to it. The original grade is not removed but no longer affects your GPA.

Your International Advisor will monitor your GPA and overall academic progress.

  • As an F-1 visa student, you are required to make normal progress toward completing your program by the end date listed on your I-20.
  • Per Bellevue College’s Academic Standards, “academic progress” means you must maintain a cumulative GPA of 2.0 or higher to remain in good academic standing.
  • If you do not meet academic progress requirements, you may not be able to complete your program by your I-20 end date. This may place your F-1 visa status at risk.

English Language Institute

All grades are included in your academic transcript and are part of your Cumulative Grade Point Average (GPA). You are expected to pass all classes to progress to the next level every quarter.

It is common to repeat a class when learning a new language skill for the first time, but it is also important to improve. Your instructors and your International Advisor will meet with you for help if you are struggling.

If you think that you are misplaced and wish to change your level, you must speak with all your instructors during the first three (3) days. The ELI Program Chair will make the final decision based on your instructors’ assessments.

If you’re on Academic Warning, you’ll repeat the class and meet with your International Advisor to explore ways to improve and learn about campus resources. Teachers will know you’re repeating the class and can support you during the next quarter.

When you get a “D” or an “F” grade for the same course(s) for the second time, you will be be put on Academic Probation and must repeat the course(s).

You are required to meet with your International Advisor before the quarter starting date or during the first three (3) days of the quarter to understand and agree to the required conditions during the probation quarter:

  1. Have a “C-” or higher in ALL classes this quarter;
  2. Not have more than 5 absences during the quarter:
  3. Schedule follow-up meetings with the International Advisor during the quarter.
  4. Understand that if you do not pass, you will be dismissed from the ELI program.
  5. Understand that your ELI grades are included in your overall academic transcript at Bellevue College.

When you get a “D” or an “F” grade in the same course(s) for the third time or fail to meet the probationary conditions, you are dismissed from the ELI program. You must meet with your International Advisor to discuss options:

  • Submit an appeal request:
    • If you have a compelling reason, you may submit a written letter to the ELI Program Chair via email. The letter should explain the circumstances that led to your unsatisfactory academic performance in the program and outline a clear plan for improvement if continuation is approved.
    • The ELI Program Chair with make the final decision in consultation with your instructors.
    • A final decision will then be communicated in writing to you, your International Advisor and the Assistant Director of International Student Advising.
    • If approved, you will be required to meet with the Director of Student Success & Retention in the Enrollment Services before you are allowed to enroll in ELIUP classes.
  • Transfer to another school. You may have an out of status SEVIS record.
  • Leave the United States immediately, (or find a different legal reason to remain here).

College Credit

If you’re dismissed from Bellevue College while in a college-level program, your SEVIS record may be terminated.
