Foundation Courses
There are several domains that can be considered universal to Allied Health education, regardless of the specific discipline that is being pursued. The foundation courses in Allied Health are designed to address these core components in the students education. These core or foundation courses have been selected, based either on the prevailing general knowledge and skills required to succeed across a variety of disciplines, or they have been selected to meet universal standards set by regulatory bodies for Allied Health disciplines. Often these two sources are in agreement, simplifying the identification and application of foundation courses for Allied Health education.
AHE 100: Introduction to Healthcare – 5 credits
An introduction to healthcare delivery systems, associated career opportunities, and related trends. Looks at the industry as a whole and the integration of services and professions. Students explore career choices including educational requirements, job outlooks, governing agencies, occupational requirements, pay ranges, professional requirements, and employer expectations.
AHE 120: Safety for Healthcare – 2 credits
Course includes Basic Life Support CPR, Bloodborne Pathogens, Workplace Violence Prevention, Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act and First Aid Certifications. Fee: $75.60 Red Cross Card/ CPR Equipment.
BIOL 108: Human Biology – 6 credits
Overview of human body functions, including an introduction to some anatomy and physiology, nutrition and exercise and modern medical advances. This course is intended for non-science majors. Course includes a laboratory. Fulfills laboratory science course requirement at BC. Recommended: High School Biology. Fee: $48.00 100-level Science lab. College in the High School students and students in on-line classes are exempt from this fee.

AHE 130: Human Systems – 5 credits
Introductory course covering basic cellular, tissue, organ and system structure. Presents an overview of the structure and function of human systems. This course does not substitute for BIOL& 241 and/or BIOL& 242. Previously HPRO 125. Either HPRO 125 or AHE 130 may be taken for credit, but not both.

CMST 280: Intercultural Communication – 5 credits
Examines the relationship between culture and various aspects of the communication process. Students explore cultural identity, bias, and worldview. Students practice skills that contribute to intercultural competence in a variety of contexts.

AHE 140: Professional Relationships In Healthcare – 5 credits
Includes interpersonal communication with patients, families, and co-workers. Developing communication skills, cultural competencies, and maintaining customer satisfaction in health care settings. Introduces HIPAA compliance in communication. Previously HPRO 130. Either HPRO 130 or AHE 140 may be taken for credit, but not both.

BUS 120: Organizational Behavior – 5 credits
Explores the dynamics of human resources in a business organization. Students develop a positive attitude toward the human element in business. Students assess and challenge their stereotype beliefs to increase objectivity. Specific topics include understanding yourself and others, diversity in organizations, perception and individual decision making, communicating in groups and teams, negotiating power and politics, conflict and negotiation, motivation, leadership, group dynamics, organizational theory, organizational culture, organizational change, participatory management and communication.
HLTH 145: Wellness for Healthcare – 3 credits
Covers the social, emotional and physical components of wellness with a focus on personal assessment and tools to design a wellness plan for life. Students explore methods for promoting health in the healthcare setting.

HLTH 250: Wellness – 5 credits
Approaches wellness from a holistic health perspective. Students learn to become informed consumers. Discussion topics include emotional and physical health and well-being, marriage and family, communicable and degenerative diseases, and drugs.

NUTR 100: Survey of Nutrition – 5 credits
A scientific view of human nutrition. Topics include digestion, absorption and nutrient requirements for healthy living, use of food additives, food fads and diets, food safety and world hunger. Fulfills Natural Science course requirement at BC.

IT 101: Introduction to Information Technology – 5 credits
Presents a general overview of information technology. Topics include how computers work, different types of computers, input and data storage devices, operating systems, data communications, systems analysis and design, and ethics. Prerequisite: Placement by assessment into ENGL& 101, or completion of ENGL 092 or 093 with a C or better, or permission of instructor.

CS 101: Technology and Computer Science – 5 credits
Introduces concepts of computer science through development of fluency in modern technology, while offering students an opportunity to increase skills in a variety of information systems. Computer lab work includes operation of computers on networks, programming fundamentals, logical reasoning, web searching, multimedia applications, basic spreadsheets, and database manipulation. Prerequisite: MATH 98 with a C or better, or placement into MATH 99 or higher.

The administration courses are designed to provide a basic understanding of medical office skills and procedures. Additional focused training is also offered for health unit coordination (HUC) and medical billing & coding specialties.
AHEA 100: Medical Law and Ethics – 3 credits
Introductory course in the practical application of law and ethics as related to medical issues healthcare employees face on a daily basis. Topics include federal and state legislation, legal liability, HIPAA, confidentiality and release of information, scheduled drugs and DEA regulations, standard-of-care, and an exploration of the legal issues related to ethical considerations of conception, quality-of-life, hospice care, and advance directives.
AHEA 102: Introduction to Medical Administration – 5 credits
This course introduces students to basic medical office procedures, including patient scheduling, written and oral communication, telecommunications, medical records management, and daily financial practices. Prerequisite: Placement by assessment into ENGL& 101, or completion of ENGL 92 or 93 with a C or better. Completion of AHE 100 and AHE 110 with a C or better or permission of Program Chair. AHEA 104: Introduction to Billing and Coding – 5 credits
Introduces Medical Billing & Coding procedures including insurance coverage, terminology, payment systems, legal and ethical issues, healthcare compliance, and collections, and common coding systems such as ICD and CPT. Prerequisite: Placement by assessment into ENGL 101, or completion of ENGL 92Â or ENGL 93Â with a C or better. Completion of AHE 100 and AHE 110Â with a C or better or permission of Program Chair
AHEA 106: Medical Computer Systems – 5 credits
Medical computer applications familiarizes students with electronic health record and financial record software used in the medical office and/or hospital settings. Prerequisite: Placement by assessment into ENGL 101, or completion of ENGL 92Â or ENGL 93Â with a C or better. Completion of AHE 100 and AHE 110Â with a C or better or permission of Program Chair.
AHEA 110: Health Unit Coordinator I – 5 credits
First in a series of courses that focus on the skills needed to become a Health Unit Coordinator. Includes certification requirements, basic data entry, proper workplace behavior, and basic office procedures. Application of these skills will be done in a lab setting. Prerequisite: Prerequisite: Placement by assessment into ENGL& 101, or completion of ENGL 092 or 093 with a C or better. Successful completion of AHE 100, 110, 120; HLTH 145; AHEA 100, 102, 104 and 106 with a C or better at BC, or permission of Program Chair. Fee: $35.00 CastleBranch tracker. Only charge a student once during their time at BC, no matter which class/program they started in. The compliance tracker allows HSEWI students to collect and share documents online. Once students setup the account it is their forever.
AHEA 112: Health Unit Coordinator II – 5 credits
The second in a series of courses focusing on skills needed to become a Health Unit Coordinator. Students learn the procedures and skills required for this position in a simulated healthcare environment. Prerequisite: Completion of AHEA 110 with a C or better or permission of Program Chair. Fee: $85.00 CastleBranch background check. CastleBranch runs national, state, and county background checks that meet requirements for clinical and other work-based learning sites, which must be completed annually in order for students to participate.
AHEA 118: Health Unit Coordinator Practicum – 5 credits
Capstone course of the Health Unit Coordinator program allows students an opportunity to apply skills learned in the classroom. Students perform functions required in a nursing unit and are monitored and supervised by an experienced Health Unit Coordinator. Prerequisite: Completion of AHEA 110 and AHEA 112 with a C or better at BC, and permission of Program Chair. AHEA 120: Intermediate Medical Coding – 5 credits
Students gain an intermediate knowledge and application of medical coding including ICD-9, ICD-10, CPT, HCPCS, and hospital coding systems. Prerequisite: Placement by assessment into ENGL&101, or completion of ENGL 092 or 093, with a C or better. Successful completion of AHEA 104 and AHEA 106 with a C or better at BC, or permission of Program Chair.
AHEA 122: Intermediate Medical Billing – 5 credits
Students gain an intermediate knowledge of medical billing and reimbursement procedures including insurance coverage, terminology, payment systems, legal and ethical issues, healthcare compliance, and collections. Prerequisite: Placement by assessment into ENGL&101, or completion of ENGL 092 or 093, with a C or better. Successful completion of AHEA 104 and AHEA 106 with a C or better at BC, or permission of Program Chair.
AHEA 124: Advanced Medical Billing and Coding – 5 credits
This course expands on intermediate medical billing & coding procedures by providing the knowledge and skills to assess, evaluate, and trouble shoot these systems. This course will also include some industry certification preparation. Prerequisite: Successful completion of both AHEA 120 and AHEA 122 with a C or better at BC, or permission of Program Chair.
Emergency Department Courses
The Emergency department courses focus on the knowledge and skills necessary to successfully participate as a multifunctional member of the emergency department team, with a focus on technical skills required at the bed side.
AHEE 120: Emergency Department Skills – 3 credits
First course of a series of corequisite courses that addresses general patient assessment skills required of Emergency Department Technicians. Prerequisite: Placement by assessment into ENGL&101, or completion of ENGL 092 or 093 with a C or better; and successful completion of AHEL 110 and AHEP 100 with a C or better at BC, or permission of Program Chair. AHEE 122: Emergency Department Diagnostics – 3 credits
Second course of a series of corequisite courses that addresses general patient diagnostic skills required of Emergency Department Technicians. AHEE 128: Emergency Department Practicum – 5 credits
Provides clinical practice in a hospital emergency room as an Emergency Department Technician. Successful completion of AHEE 120, AHEE 122, and AHEE 124 with a C or better at BC, and permission of the Program Chair No more than one quarter between completion of AHEE 120, 122, 124 and enrollment in AHEE 128. Laboratory Courses
Laboratory courses often cross into several disciplines, providing the basic blood collection and processing knowledge and skills for multiple areas. The laboratory courses further develop these skills in the discipline specific areas for phlebotomy and clinical laboratory.
AHEL 110: Introduction to Phlebotomy – 5 credits
Covers phlebotomy skills and responsibilities. Includes venipuncture (blood draw) techniques and safety techniques with laboratory equipment and needles. Suitable for individuals with limited health care experience interested in venipuncture. Recommended: First 2 of 3 Hepatitis B vaccinations completed (allow 4 weeks). Manual dexterity and ability to safely handle sharp needles. Prerequisite: Placement by assessment into ENGL 101, or completion of ENGL 092 or 093 with a C or better. AHEL 112: Advanced Phlebotomy – 5 credits
Expands on the basic responsibilities and skills for the laboratory phlebotomist. This course is for students pursuing phlebotomy specific credentialing, by providing refinement of and advanced techniques for phlebotomy. Prerequisite: Successful completion of AHEL 110 with a C or better at BC or permission of Program Chair. No more than one quarter between completion of AHEL 110 and enrollment in AHEL 112. Recommended: Completion of 2 of 3 Hepatitis B vaccinations. Fees: $60.00 Allied Health (AHE) Lab supply Tier 2. $85.00 CastleBranch background check. Since some of the Health Sciences programs run for more than one-year students have been paying for a background re-check for these programs out of pocket in order to participate in their clinical or work-based classes.
AHEL 118: Phlebotomy Practicum – 5 credits
Provides practical experience in the role of the phlebotomy technician. Grading: Satisfactory/Unsatisfactory. Fee: $23.50 Student Liability and Malpractice Insurance, charged once per year.
AHEL 120: Introduction to Clinical Laboratory – 5 credits
Provides an overview of clinical laboratory assistant work including organizational structures, regulatory standards, quality assurance practices, and basic clinical laboratory procedures. Prerequisites: Placement by assessment into ENGL 101, or completion of ENGL 092 or ENGL 093 with a C (2.0) or better. Completion of AHE 100, AHE 110, AHE 120, and BIOL 108 (or BIOL 241 AND 242) with a C or better, or permission of Program Chair. See bellevuecollege.edu/ahe. AHEL 122: Advanced Clinical Laboratory – 5 credits
Second course in a series designed to prepare students to work in a clinical laboratory setting. Provides expanded laboratory focused work including regulatory standards; quality assurance practices; and advanced clinical laboratory procedures. Prerequisite: Completion of AHEL 120 with a C or better at BC or permission of Program Chair. Fee: $60.00 Allied Health (AHE) Lab supply Tier 2.
AHEL 128: Clinical Laboratory Practicum – 5 credits
Final course in a series designed to prepare students to work in a clinical laboratory setting. Provides experiential application of knowledge and skills gained through prior course work in a professional practicum. Prerequisite: Completion of all CLA certificate program courses AND externship requirements. Grade for each program course is a C (2.0) or better. Permission of Program Chair. Pharmacology Courses
Several disciplines require basic knowledge of pharmaceutic principles in order to successfully interact as a member of the healthcare team.
AHEP 100: Introduction to Pharmacology – 3 credits
Introduction to the study of drugs. How drugs affect the body and how the body affects drugs. Includes controlled and uncontrolled drug classification, generic and brand name medications, and the government agency that monitors the production and usage of drugs.
AHEP 101: Medication Administration & Calculation – 3 credits
This course introduces the practical application of administering medications to patients. The course covers both enteral and parenteral administration of medications including topical, oral, rectal, intramuscular, subcutaneous, intradermal, and intravascular. Prerequisite: Successful completion of, or concurrent enrollment in AHEP 100, or permission of Program Chair. Fee: $60.00 Allied Health (AHE) Lab supply Tier 2.
Clinical Medicine Courses
Clinical medicine courses are focused toward the Medical Assisting program (MA-C) and the knowledge and skills needed for the clinical side of this profession.
AHEM 120: Clinical Medicine – 3 credits
This is the first in a cohort of courses focused on Medical Assistant skills. The course covers the basic knowledge and skills to assist with rooming patients in the clinical setting, including History & Physical, Vital Signs and patient preparation for the provider consult. Prerequisites: Placement by assessment into ENGL&101, or completion of ENGL 092 or 093 with a C or better. Successful completion of AHEL 110, AHEL 120, AHEP 100, and BIOL 125 with a C or better; or permission of Program Chair. Fee: $60.00 Allied Health (AHE) Lab supply Tier 2.
AHEM 122: Clinical Procedures – 3 credits
This is the second in a series of courses covering Medical Assistant skills. The focus is on clinical procedures, preparation and set up, sterile fields, instrument handing and sterilizing, procedure follow up and education. Fee: $60.00 Allied Health (AHE) Lab supply Tier 2.
AHEM 124: Diagnostic Medicine – 3 credits
This is the third in a series of courses on Medical Assistant skills. The focus is on diagnostic testing in the clinical setting including CLIA-waived Point-of-care testing, ECG, Spirometry. Prerequisite: Concurrent enrollment in AHEM 120 or permission of Program Chair. Fees: $60.00 Allied Health (AHE) Lab supply Tier 2; $85.00 CastleBranch background check. AHEM 128: Medical Assistant Practicum – 5 credits
