Slanted Eyes: The Asian American Experience

Close

May 12, 2015

Sam Louie, an Emmy Award winner and former broadcast journalist, will be speaking about the Asian American experience on May 12 at 11:30am in N201 in celebration of API heritage month.  This is a free event that is open to the public.

What stereotypes persist for Asian Americans? How is life in America different for Asian refugees than for Asian immigrants? The term "Asian" represents more than 40 different ethnic groups who now call America home. Histories, traditions, and cultures vary greatly between different Asian groups, making the experience of confronting stereotypes and others' preconceived ideas of "Asian" disturbing. For Asian refugees who fled persecution or death, experiences of living in America are vastly different than for immigrants who left their home country for a better life in the U.S. From the racist to the innocuous, issues of culture, ethnicity, and discrimination are consistent and prevalent themes for Asian Americans. In this interactive presentation, psychologist and former broadcast journalist Sam Louie uses spoken word poetry to guide audiences to better understand the depth of cultural issues that confront Asian Americans today.

About Sam Louie

Sam Louie, MA, is a licensed mental health counselor with a private practice in Seattle specializing in addictions and multi-cultural issues. An Emmy Award recipient, he is a former broadcast journalist who has researched, produced, and reported on a number of stories related to ethnicity, addictions, and psychotherapy.
