The BC Financial Aid Office will host free tax assistance and Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) workshops on campus over the next few months. If you earned less than $60,000 in 2014 and plan to file a 1040A or 1040EZ, United Way tax volunteers can help you file your taxes for FREE! Afterwards, BC Financial Aid advisors can help you complete your FAFSA online and explain other items needed for receiving financial aid at BC.

Bellevue College Music Dept: Pacific Vocal Jazz Festival

Who: Vocal Jazz Ensemble directed by Thomas Almli

What: Pacific Vocal Jazz Festival: Bellevue College's Pacific Vocal Jazz Festival. Celebration, BC's Vocal Jazz Ensemble directed by Thomas Almli will host their annual "Pacific Vocal Jazz Festival". Up to 16 local High/Middle schools in Washington will be invited to perform and attend a clinic on Friday. Prelims in the Carlson are free to the public 8am to 5p. Then there will be a Friday Evening Gala Concert at 7:30pm in the Carlson Theatre, General Admission is $7. The top three schools will start off the concert, then BC Vocal Jazz Ensemble and Guest Artist “Last Call”.

Kevin Powell Keynote - Black History Month event

In honor of Black History Month, Kevin Powell will be on our campus delivering two powerful keynotes: Feb. 3: 10:30 - 11:20 a.m. & 11:30 a.m. - 12:20 p.m. - N201

Kevin Powell is one of the most acclaimed political, cultural, literary and hip-hop voices in America today. Kevin is a native of Jersey City, raised by a single mother in extreme poverty, but managed to study at Rutgers University in New Brunswick thanks to New Jersey's Educational Opportunity Fund. Kevin has gone on to be the author of 11 books, including Barack Obama, Ronald Reagan, and the Ghost of Dr. King: Blogs and Essays. Among his upcoming books is his memoir of a very difficult childhood and youth, to be released in 2015 by Simon & Schuster. In 2016, he will publish a biography of Tupac Shakur, the late rapper and controversial American icon. Kevin's writings have also appeared in CNN.com, Esquire, Ebony, The Huffington Post, The Washington Post, Rolling Stone, The Guardian, ESPN.com and Vibe Magazine, where he worked for many years as a senior writer, interviewing such diverse public figures as Tupac Shakur and General Colin Powell.

This is event is open to the entire campus.  Teachers are encouraged to bring classes!

Bellevue College Music Dept: Big Band Jazz Festival

Who: Jazz Band directed by Jim Sisko

What: BC's Jazz Band directed by Jim Sisko will host the 19th annual Big Band Jazz Festival. There will be 32 Washington and Oregon High Schools and Middle Schools competing for top honors. Friday will be an all day event for Middle Schools with the top 3 schools and 8 individual awards to be handed out at the end of the day. High schools and will compete all day on Saturday until 5 pm when the top 3 schools will be selected for the evening concert. The Saturday Evening Concert will start at 7:30pm pm with the top 3 high schools and the followed by our own BC Jazz Band performing Big Band Music. There will be a guest artist, Scott Wendholt, trumpeter, performing a clinic on Friday & Saturday during the lunch hour; as well as, he will be performing with the BC Jazz Band in the evening concert.

Date/Time: Feb 6th, 2015. All day Middle/Junior High competitions

Feb 7th, 2015. All day High School competition and an evening concert at 7:30pm

How to Win Scholarships

Could you use more money next year? Interested in scholarships?

You can learn more about scholarship programs that are perfect for BC students on Wednesday, February 11, from 2:30 to 3:20 in N201.  We'll be serving cookies, snacks, and lots of valuable information. Susan Kingsbury-Comeau will discuss the Bellevue College Foundation Scholarships, 50 to 75 scholarships that are open only to BC students. Megan Nelson and Kim King from the College Success Foundation will discuss the Washington State Opportunity Scholarship.  About 750 of these scholarships will be awarded to students studying health sciences or STEM (science, technology, engineering, or math).

 

The panelists will share expert advice on how to put together a strong scholarship application.  The scholarship awards range from $1,000 to $5,000 per year.

Please join us Weds Feb 11 at 2:30 in N201 if you'd like to learn more about how to win these scholarships.  This event is open to all BC students.
