President’s Message: State Budget
Feb 28, 2025In a news conference yesterday, Washington state Gov. Bob Ferguson announced a series of recommended cost-saving measures to help resolve a nearly $16 billion budget shortfall.

Dear Bellevue College community,
In a news conference yesterday, Washington state Gov. Bob Ferguson announced a series of recommended cost-saving measures to help resolve a nearly $16 billion budget shortfall. Among other things, the governor’s proposal calls for most state employees, including those in higher education, to take 24 furlough days from July 2025 through June 2027. The total would amount to one furlough day per month for the next two years. A furlough is a temporary leave of unpaid work.
But this is not the final outcome.
While this announcement may be alarming, please bear in mind that Gov. Ferguson’s budget proposal is just that — a proposal to the Legislature. Ultimately, it will be up to the House and Senate to come together and write a final state budget. As we move forward, Bellevue College will continue to join forces with our fellow colleges and the State Board to advance our college system’s priorities in support of students, faculty, and staff.
Please know that we deeply appreciate your dedication and the invaluable work you do for our students and our college community. As the budget process unfolds, we remain committed to monitoring this proposal, along with others that may impact our campus, keeping you informed as details are finalized, and advocating for the best possible outcomes.
Sincerely,
Dr. David May
Bellevue College President
