Gallery Space to feature graphic works by African American artists

As part of Bellevue College’s celebration of Black History Month, a special exhibit of works by some of the most prominent African-American artists from the past 40 years will open Feb. 6 in the college’s Gallery Space. The exhibit is sponsored by BC’s Office of Multicultural Services, and the Office of Equity and Pluralism.
“Color(ing) Within the Lines: Graphic Works by African American Artists” will include art by Kara Walker, Jean-Michel Basquiat, Romare Bearden, Jacob Lawrence, Lorna Simpson and many others.
“The images all, in different ways, deal with race and identity,” said Kate Casprowiak, a Bellevue College art instructor who curated the exhibit. “Negative and positive stereotypes are also confronted in many of the works.”
The works are owned by collector and philanthropist Jordan Schnitzer, who will speak in Carlson Theater at 4:30 p.m. on Feb. 6. He will then join a reception in the Gallery Space that runs from 4 to 8 p.m. Entrance to both the reception and the exhibit is free and open to the public.
The exhibit runs through April 12. Gallery hours are Monday through Thursday, 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.; Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.; and Saturday, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Gallery Space is located on the second floor of the D Building in Room 271, at the southwest end of the main campus, 3000 Landerholm Circle SE.
