Tech Tips of the Week #1

Tech Tips for January 21, 2021

Technology tips of the week are sent to faculty about once a week, and contain short descriptions for ongoing tech problems and reminders for faculty.  If you need additional support with any online technology teaching tools please contact the eLearning staff using the Request Center or eLearning email

1) Zoom Focus Mode

Focus mode gives the host and co-hosts view of all participants’ videos without other participants seeing each other. This extends into screen sharing, as the host and co-host can view and switch between each participant’s shared screen, while the participants can only view their own content. If the host finds a participant’s content should be shared with others, they can easily begin sharing the participant’s screen with others.

Bellevue College faculty have the ability to turn on focus mode from within their College Zoom accounts. More information is provided on Zoom Support about Focus Mode.

Ed Tech tip on Focus Mode. Focus mode shows only hosts and co-host's video in Zoom.

2) Canvas Courses from Prior Quarters Not-editable?

If you have a Canvas course from a prior quarter which you can no longer edit, then one solution is to import it to a sandbox. You can make updates and changes within the sandbox and export it back to an active class site.

Contact eLearning if you need an additional Canvas sandbox. You won’t need an additional sandbox for every past course, since you have the ability to edit, delete, and re-add new courses to any one sandbox as many times as you’d like, but it can be helpful to have more than one sandbox.  Request Center
