Workshop-Accessibility 101: Principles of Inclusive Design

Dear Faculty,

Learn how you can make easy changes and additions to your Canvas courses in order to create an inclusive course environment for all students. The Accessibility 101: Principles of Inclusive Design (ONLINE) workshop is being offered with flexibility to complete assignments in six weeks.

The purpose of this course is to introduce participants to the basics of accessibility, with emphasis placed on making content accessible while promoting proactive (as opposed to reactive) steps that people can take to create and advocate for accessible content.

Participants will learn:

  • The language of accessibility and the laws that most impact higher-ed.
  • How to create accessible content based on the principles of Universal Design for Learning.
  • To differentiate between access and accommodation.
  • To create simple accessible documents, Canvas pages, PDFs, and/or PowerPoint presentations.
  • How to identify and use the various approaches to caption a video.
  • To take steps to ensure online technology is accessible to students, faculty, and staff on your campus.

The workshop is a facilitated six-week online course, designed to be completed in 20 hours. Upon completion, you will achieve a Canvas badge, which will be displayed in your Canvas profile.

In addition to the readings and links posted in the workshop, we recommend that you will read Norman Coombs’ Making Online Teaching Accessible. Copies are available for checkout at the Interactive eLearning & Media Center, Room D140 located in the Library Media Center.
