I-BEST Program Supports Better Futures

Having come to the United States from Nicaragua, speaking Spanish and wanting a better future for herself and her family, Lissette (Lisa) Echeverria enrolled at Bellevue College.
For three years, she took classes through the Integrated Basic Education and Skills Training (I-BEST) program for two certificates of accomplishment — one to become a project coordinator and another in project management.
“The I-BEST program helped me build confidence in speaking and understanding English,” Echeverria said. “It also gave me training in technology, which helped me feel more prepared for jobs in that field. Because of this program, I felt more confident applying for better jobs.”
I-BEST is a nationally recognized program for pre-college students, such as those who are non-native English speakers and adult basic education learners. Students enroll in college classes and receive additional support in language learning and study skills. At Bellevue College, students can earn certificates in business technology, accounting, healthcare, and more through the program.
Echeverria is now working at the Bellevue School District as a substitute teacher. In that role, she uses the communication skills she learned through I-BEST and works with different data systems.
I-BEST not only helped Echeverria in her English speaking and education, but it’s helped her pay it forward through her family’s education as well.
“I came to the U.S. to build a better future for myself and my family,” she said. “I wanted my children to have a better childhood and education than I had. This program has been very helpful with my children’s learning because I am able to help with homework and communicate at school meetings in person and online. I don’t need a translation assistant anymore.”
Echeverria is the first to acknowledge she didn’t do this alone. She credits the instructors in both her academic programs and I-BEST with her success today.
“Their support made a big difference in my future,” she said of the faculty. “Without their patience, guidance, and encouragement, I don’t think I would have had the successful journey I’ve had. I’m thankful to each one of them for believing in me and helping me learn a lot in each class.”
